"The Gray Lady" by Linda Jo Heffner
The USS Long Beach was the first nuclear powered surface combatant and was launched in 1959. Its crew dubbed the vessel, "The Gray Lady" and is distinctive in its design due to the high box-like superstructure which contained an experimental platform for various radar arrays. Linda's watercolor painting depicts the emergence of the Long Beach from a tumultuous sea and a sun lit mist.
